It is a unfortunate truth that Driving Under the Influence, or DUI, is such a prevalent occurrence in the United States. Even though DUIs are punishable by law, the practice continues throughout the nation, much to the chagrin of law enforcement agencies across the country. However, there have been ways that law enforcement agencies are trying to combat this problem in order to deter people from drinking and driving. The states will simply enforce more strict laws and penalties, while others will take a more proactive approach. DUI checkpoints are conducted by law enforcement agencies in order to detain drunk drivers. At a DUI check point, law enforcement officials will block certain roads and typically have a brief conversation with motorists as they pass through. This will entail a series of brief questions which are meant to screen the driver and determine whether he/she is drinking and driving. If the officer has enough reason to suspect a DUI, the police may employ sobriety tests to further determine if the driver has been consuming alcohol or is under the influence of a controlled substance.
